About our Team

Powertrain Engineering contributes to the Volvo Group’s competitive position in the marketplace by developing and maintaining profitable products and product components in terms of quality, delivery, cost, and function, while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. Our scope of work includes the engineering and design of engines, gearboxes, axles, hybrid technology, and driveline, based on common architecture and shared technology. 

 

In Curitiba, we play a significant role in the Latin American market concerning Powertrain Engineering Applications. We have ownership of heavy diesel engines in all markets worldwide up to Euro 5 legislation. For Euro 6 development, we not only provide support but also engage in specific global responsibilities. Furthermore, we collaborate with the global organization on various delegated responsibilities as needed, including those related to US emissions standards (EPA/CARB), Euro 7, and concept development. 

 

In the EATS & Combustion Diagnostics team, we develop the OBD calibration of combustion engines and exhaust after-treatment systems. Our team consists of skilled engineers with diverse backgrounds who work together to find innovative solutions for On-Board Diagnostics, through both deskwork and hands-on activities at engine test cells and vehicles, supporting software and hardware development. 

 

We are seeking a motivated individual to join us as an OBD Performance & Calibration Engineer. Do you want to be a part of it? 
 

What you will do

As an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) Performance and Calibration Engineer, you will work in the engineering department focused on heavy and medium-duty engines and their exhaust after-treatment systems. Your goal will be to assist the team in the design, development, and implementation of diagnostic systems that monitor and report the performance of various components in compliance with legislative requirements. The diagnostics team interfaces with various areas of the Volvo Group, including vehicle testing, engine dynamometer operations, and software development, supported by a comprehensive infrastructure at the Curitiba plant. Our product scope includes trucks and buses, and we work closely with colleagues and customers in different countries, either providing support or taking on global responsibility. 

 

Your core responsibilities will be

  • Support the development and implementation of diagnostic strategies for vehicle systems to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Plan, prepare, and execute vehicle testing and diagnostics activities to validate OBD systems.
  • Analyze diagnostic data and perform calculations to identify trends and troubleshoot issues within vehicle systems.
  • Organize and maintain diagnostic documentation and calibration files for production and compliance purposes.
  • Participate in vehicle development projects, assessing diagnostic requirements and potential impacts on performance and emissions.
  • Support the OBD certification process to ensure compliance with emissions regulations.
  • Address and resolve diagnostic system issues during product maintenance and development phases.
     

Required Experience and Technical Skills

  • Understanding of powertrain operation and/or engine after-treatment systems.
  • Ability to work in engine test benches and vehicles.
  • Software calibration of diesel engines, after-treatment systems, and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Euro IV, V, VI legislations and the engine certification process.
  • Familiarity with data analysis and optimization tools such as Python, MATLAB, Uniplot, VBA, etc.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with calibration tools such as ATI-Vision, ETAS-Inca, AVL-Creta, CANalyzer.
  • Ability to apply statistical techniques to evaluate and improve OBD calibration processes, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Proven hands-on experience in projects of medium and high complexity.
  • Understanding of the heavy-duty market and applications.
  • Ability to identify technical risks.

 

Education

  • Master of Science (equivalent to engineering degree in Brazil) in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics or Control and Automation Engineering.
  • Higher graduation level is a merit.
  • Fluent in English and Portuguese, both written and spoken.
