Master Thesis: Transmission housing influence on gear churning losses

Location:

Göteborg, SE, 417 15

Position Type:  Student

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Position Description

Proper lubrication of transmission gears is crucial to ensure the durability of complete transmission. For gears lubricated through dip lubrication, the lubrication generates churning losses. To ensure low fuel consumption or long range in battery electric vehicles, it is important to minimize the churning losses but still retain good lubrication of said gears.

Churning losses occur due to the interaction between the different subsystems in the transmission, oil, gears, housing etc. The goal of this master thesis is to investigate what influence housing and gear interaction have on the churning losses. This will be done by both empirical means and through CFD or SPH simulations.

Description of thesis work

The objectives of the thesis are:

  • Empirical testing of wall-gear interaction in a dedicated testing rig. The rig has been used in previous work at Volvo – however, the scope of the thesis means that minor modifications will be needed. Thus, the thesis also requires CAD design and rapid prototyping. The goal of the test setup is to be able to test several different wall designs around an existing gear pair. The data obtained will then be able to give design input for future projects.

  • CFD or SPH simulations to explain the empirical test results. This part of the thesis work is important to understand why certain design choices should be made.

  • If time allows, predict how the different wall-gear interactions influence the cooling of the gears.

Qualifications & Key Attributes

  • Master student in Engineering Physics, Mathematics or Applied Mechanics

  • Positive attitude, willing to learn, disciplined, good communication skills, humble, result oriented

  • Experience using Creo and CFD

Duration

The thesis project will start in January 2025 and continue 20 weeks. The diploma work gives 30 points (ECTS) per student
