BESS Thermal Modelling Engineer

Location:

Bangalore, IN, 562122

Position Type:  Professional

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

What you will do

Volvo Energy is seeking a skilled and motivated Thermal Modelling Engineer to lead CFD and heat transfer simulations across 0D to 3D for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). You will develop and correlate thermal models for the BESS enclosure and thermal management system, enabling robust sizing, integration, and control-oriented thermal solutions.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Develop CFD and conjugate heat transfer (CHT) models for the BESS enclosure, including battery and control room, using CAE tools such as STAR-CCM+ and ANSYS.
Develop 0D and 1D thermal models for the BESS thermal management system using tools such as GT-Suite, Simulink and AMESim, covering refrigeration systems, ACU, and battery cooling circuits.
  • Analyze and evaluate BESS thermal performance and efficiency, accounting for heat loads from batteries and electrical components (e.g., PCS, auxiliary power supply) and protection equipment (e.g., switchgear, DCJB), as well as environmental conditions such as solar and wind.
  • Support thermal sizing and concept selection for the overall thermal management system, incorporating operating scenarios, external conditions, changing thermal demand, and system-level performance targets.
  • Collaborate with battery, electrical, controls, and software teams to ensure end-to-end system integration, and contribute to holistic thermal solutions including model predictive control (MPC) strategies.

Who are you?

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 6+ years of relevant experience in thermal modelling and simulation.
  • Strong foundation in thermal physics, fluid dynamics, modelling methods, and structured problem solving.

Must-haves

  • Deep understanding of thermal management systems (HVAC) and heat transfer fundamentals, including CFD and energy balance concepts.
  • Working knowledge of BESS building blocks and interfaces, including batteries, PCS, protection systems, monitoring systems, and integration with solar and grid connectivity.
  • Experience with digital twins and with surrogate or reduced-order modelling approaches.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to compile, analyze, and present technical findings clearly to stakeholders (written and verbal).

Good-to-have

  • Experience with FMEA and DFMEA.
  • Knowledge of system controls and power electronics.
  • Experience with Python and/or SQL, and practical skills in data exploration, visualization, and applied statistics.
