Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

About the thesis work

For this thesis work you will join the department of VPD (virtual product development). We are located at site Braås, part of Volvo Construction Equipment and home of the articulated hauler. VPD works with virtual product development in the areas of vehicle simulation, structural and vibration analysis, and data analytics. We have a great interest in mathematics, physics, and problem-solving.

The purpose of the thesis work is to calculate the residual stress distribution, originating from the welding process, for typical fillet welds by using FEA software like ANSYS, LS-DYNA or similar.

Residual stresses from welding occur as a result of permanent deformation in the welding zone of the component. Tensile weld residual stress decreases the fatigue life and compressive weld residual stress increases the fatigue life. It is thus necessary to have knowledge about distribution and magnitude of weld residual stresses in the welded structures. This investigation mostly relies on finite elements simulation considering coupled thermal mechanical analysis. In order to do so, FEA software can be used for welding simulation and thereby evaluate residual stresses. The FEA software is used to solve multi physics problems including solid mechanics and heat transfer by using the thermal solver in combination with the mechanical solver.
