About the team
The Product Training Department for Volvo Penta Region Americas (VPA), headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia, is responsible for competence development for our dealers and partners within the industrial and marine segments.
Role overview
In this role, you will be responsible for transferring product knowledge to Volvo Penta partners, dealers, OEMs, trainers and internal personnel regarding design and function, diagnostics and repair of all industrial and marine engines, electric and hybrid drive systems, transmissions and control systems via in-person and virtual events. It is also your responsibility to develop learning materials and that all training activities are conducted in a safe, professional, courteous and positive way. Some of your core responsibilities will include:
Key responsibilities
- Provide authorized dealers, partners and trainers with competence development on products and services for the industrial and marine products including engines, transmissions, electronic control systems and hybrid drive systems
- Deliver instructor-led training at local and remote locations both domestic and international
- Assist in driving the Certified External Trainer program to increase overall network training capacity while securing training quality
- Utilize feedback from training participants to continuously improve training activities and content.
- Secure efficiency and effectiveness in training activities
- Develop and implement curriculums to work in conjunction with equipment and online learning materials
- Develop and maintain a high level of technical product knowledge and ensure product information is updated within the curriculums accordingly
- Provide input and support the Train-the-Trainer (TtT) program
- Prepare school locations for scheduled training activities as well as logistics to secure training equipment inventory
- Provide critical insight and contributions to the product training team to execute plans and to achieve set targets
- Collaborate with colleagues within the company and the training community on a regular basis
- Evaluate student feedback and implement improvement opportunities
Travel
Travel for this position will be frequent during training season (October–November, January–April) up to 75% during season.
What you'll bring
To be successful in this role, you have experience instructing classes (in-person and virtual), product troubleshooting, and repair of complex power and drive systems including electric, hybrid, and combustion engines. You bring strong teaching skills, a technical background, and a continuous improvement mindset that improves efficiency and results within the team.
- Experience with electric powertrain and hybrid technologies within a related industry
- In-depth knowledge of retail marine leisure, marine commercial, and/or industrial service trade practices and activities (direct experience or extensive dealer interaction)
- Knowledge of telematics related to connectivity, remote diagnostics, etc.
- Experience with curriculum design
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to interface with all levels of employees, leaders, customers, suppliers, partners and other stakeholders
- Can read, write, understand and speak English. Bilingual (English plus Spanish, Swedish, French, etc.) a plus
Basic qualifications
- Proficiency with MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Outlook; familiarity with diagnostic programs for troubleshooting
- Excellent communication skills and fluency in speaking and writing English to communicate successfully with internal and external stakeholders at different levels of the organization
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technical-related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 3+ years of technical instructor experience in marine, industrial, electrical drive systems, or automotive industries
- Minimum 3–4 years’ combined experience with engine and power systems

This job is an on-site position in Chesapeake, Virginia however we provide some flexibility based on Volvo Group work principles and coordination with your manager
