Who we are

In Volvo Group IP we have four highly specialized and competent teams; Patents, IP Strategy & Portfolio, IP Legal, Trademarks & Designs and IP Business Office with IP responsibility for the complete Volvo Group. The Patents team is global with locations in France, Korea, India, Sweden and the US. We are now looking for one Patent Agent to join our highly skilled team in Curitiba, Brazil.

The Patents team works in different technology areas. You will also be part of a cross functional portfolio team focusing on a specific technology area. The diversity in the portfolio team allows to efficiently use the strength of each team member. You will function as a patent expert in the portfolio team.
You will be located at Volvo Group premises in Curitiba.

Role Description

As a patent Agent, in Volvo, you are an expert in all matters relating to patents. You are responsible for protecting inventions and obtaining patent protection and challenging third party patent rights to leverage Volvo Group’s leading technology position. Patent Agents are also responsible for giving proactive advice to R&D projects, inventors and other stakeholders relating to proprietary and third party patent rights. You will also have responsibility to support and contribute in further development of IP services and processes.

You will be reporting directly to the Global Group Director Patents, whom in turn reports to the Vice President Patents. The position offers a global working environment with dedicated and professional colleagues.

You will also be responsible for:

• Handling IP generation / invention harvesting workshops and provide advice and guidelines on inventions, invention disclosures, patent protection strategies and proprietary as well as third party patent right.
• Supporting the Volvo Group patent creation process by drafting and prosecuting patent applications and defending Volvo Group patents challenged by third parties before a patent office
• Preparing and rendering patent-related opinion such as patentability, freedom to operate, including validity and infringement, opinions.
• Providing advice on patent-related matters, such as patent opposition, appeal, freedom to operate, including validity and infringement, as well as classification and use of proprietary patent rights and portfolios
• Managing external IP firms in connection with patent related-services, including requirements, compliance with service items and quality of services and work products.
• Providing input on the Volvo Group IP Plan.
• Keeping abreast of the development of patent law and practice of major jurisdictions.
• Providing support, as applicable, to IP Legal, Trademarks & Designs and others, in contentious and/or enforcement patent matters, IP-related agreements and M&A matters.

You have strong technical skills in vehicle engineering domain like Thermal supply, Brake System, Aero, Complete engine control, Chassis Structure, Steering Hardware, Powertrain control and Vehicle Control System. If you are passionate about IP and creating value, then this truly is the position for you.

Education and Experience:

This role is open to two types of candidates:

1. Experienced Patent Agent
   
   

• Currently working in an IP law firm with solid professional experience.
• Comfortable communicating with engineers and passionate about promoting IP awareness.

2. Senior Engineer Transitioning into Intellectual Property

• Extensive background in the vehicle engineering domain.
• Eager to transition into the Intellectual Property field and open to training to become a Patent Agent.
• Strong interest in innovation, patents, and the strategic value of IP.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a natural ability to engage with technical teams.

Key Requirements (for both profiles):

• Strong technical foundation in vehicle engineering.
• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
• Ability to collaborate with R&D teams and explain IP concepts clearly.
• A proactive mindset and enthusiasm for raising IP awareness across the organization.
