About the role:
The Certification & Compliance Engineer is responsible for ensuring full regulatory compliance and successful certification of heavy-duty engines across multiple markets. This role holds global responsibility for emission regulations of legacy engine platforms and regional responsibility (Latin America) for all emission levels, including Euro VI.
This position acts as the project focal point for certification and compliance, supporting powertrain development and industrialization projects by planning, coordinating, monitoring, and reporting all regulatory activities related to exhaust emissions.
The role also supports interactions with Type Approval Authorities, technical services, and regulatory bodies, and contributes to the continuous monitoring and interpretation of Brazilian emission legislation.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Coordination & Certification Management
• Act as the point of contact for Certification & Compliance within assigned engine and vehicle projects.
• Manage certification and compliance activities across engineering, testing, manufacturing, and project management teams.
• Plan, track, and manage certification schedules, deliverables, risks, and dependencies.
• Support project teams to ensure compliance requirements are met at each development phase.
• Prepare and present certification and compliance status at project gates, recommending go / no-go decisions to Project Management Engineering (PME) and Engineering Quality Management.
Regulatory Compliance & Technical Support:
• Support the interpretation and application of Brazilian exhaust emission regulations (e.g., PROCONVE and related standards), and of United Nations regulations up to Euro V.
• Maintenance of Facility Appraisal and ISO 17025 compliance of Volvo Curitiba Engine facilities.
• Communicate regulatory requirements clearly and consistently to Powertrain Industrial organization.
• Monitor regulatory updates, assess potential impacts, and ensure timely internal dissemination.
• Support regulatory impact analysis during product changes, industrial modifications, and engineering updates.
Interface with Authorities & External Stakeholders
• Support interactions with Type Approval Authorities and technical services related to engine certification.
• Assist in the preparation and submission of certification documentation and technical files.
• Participate in meetings with regulatory agencies and contribute to technical discussions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Represent Certification & Compliance in project forums such as PIL, PMR, and issue-resolution meetings.
• Support problem-solving activities related to certification risks, deviations, and regulatory concerns.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Automotive, Mechatronics, or related disciplines).
Experience
• Relevant experience in engineering, certification, regulatory compliance, project coordination, testing, or powertrain development.
• Previous exposure to emission legislation, engine testing, or type approval processes is desirable.
Technical & Professional Skills
• Basic to intermediate knowledge of Brazilian exhaust emission regulations (e.g., PROCONVE).
• Project coordination and organizational skills.
• Structured, methodical, and detail-oriented working approach.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic project environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Languages
• Portuguese – fluent (mandatory)
• English – fluent (mandatory)
