We are currently looking for a committed and qualified professional seeking a career opportunity as a Specialist Data Scientist – Powertrain Engineering. Someone curious about data and passionate about the business!
You have a mixture of multidisciplinary skills ranging from an intersection of mathematics, statistics, automotive engineering, computer science, communication and business. You know about data, automotive technology and programming.
You will work together with a group of data engineers, scientists, analysts, simulation engineers and application engineers. Our main job is to transform Big Data transmitted through telematics by our products into knowledge to support the development of new products and services.
About us
Powertrain Engineering is contributing to the Volvo Group’s competitive position in the marketplace by developing and maintaining profitable products and product components in terms of quality, delivery, cost, and feature, and that comply with all applicable regulatory requirements. Our scope of work includes engineering and design of engines, gearboxes, axles, hybrid technology, and driveline, based on common architecture and shared technology.
Data Analytics, Virtual Simulation and Application Engineering is part of the Powertrain Engineering Application Center in Curitiba and is responsible for simulation and data analytics. This covers structural, energy, fluid, function, and control systems simulations, as well as the analysis of telematics data from our connected vehicles.
Digital transformation is a priority in our strategy, and within this context, the data analytics team plays an important role by accelerating the development of products and services. We collaborate with our colleagues in Gothenburg (Sweden), Lyon (France), Hagerstown (USA), and Bangalore (India).
Job Summary
As a Specialist Data Scientist in our team your main purpose is to create value from data. You will have the opportunity to analyze and solve real world problems with connected data from our running products.
Our team supports the development of global products and services, so there is a wide range of projects and data sources that you will encounter and work with. You will be responsible to accelerate and increase assertiveness within all powertrain areas: medium and heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, rear axles and other components.
Since data without context is not meaningful it is important to have a curious mindset and willingness to learn more about the automotive industry.
Accountabilities and Responsabilities
- Lead data-related activities in projects involving new powertrain products and services, maintenance tasks and quality issues.
- Simply the understanding of complex data and present it in a structured and clear manner within the context of the automotive industry.
- Collaborate with data and application engineers to develop data tools that support decision-making.
- Analyze and present data in a summarized and visually appealing way.
- Perform data mining and analysis using a range of statistical methods, machine learning, and AI models to uncover patterns and trends from existing data sources.
- Keep strong communication within engineering and Volvo Groups brands.
- Identify and integrate new datasets that can enhance product capabilities, working closely with engineering teams to develop data-driven solutions.
- Participate in global Communities of Practices.
Education, Experience Knowledge and Skills
- You have a degree in Computer, Mechanical, Control Systems, Electronics Engineering or related areas.
- Strong experience in the automotive industry with vehicle application, supporting quality and product development.
- Experience with vehicle-connected data is a strong differential.
- Programming skills in SQL, DAX and Python, and in coding versioning management tools (e.g., Bitbucket and Git).
- Experience with analyzing large real-world datasets.
- Strong planning skills in cross-functional, data-related activities within both agile and waterfall environments.
- Competent computer skills in Microsoft Office and Power BI.
- Strong communication and presentation skills in Portuguese and English, both spoken and written.
- A commercial vehicle driver’s license is preferred but not a prerequisite.
