What you will do

Position Summary

The Environmental Sustainability Intern will support site-level sustainability and environmental compliance initiatives focused on water conservation, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and document management. This role provides hands-on experience with industrial environmental programs and offers the opportunity to lead targeted improvement projects that advance our sustainability goals.


Key Responsibilities

Water Conservation

  • Conduct water walks to inspect facilities for leaks, losses, and high-risk use points.

  • Document findings and assist in prioritizing corrective actions to reduce water waste.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

  • Perform waste and recycling audits (“waste walks”) to evaluate current practices and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Support the landfill-free initiative by improving lineside recycling systems and labeling for ease of use and compliance.

  • Track waste diversion metrics and assist in updating recycling and landfill-free reporting.

Energy & Heat Efficiency

  • Lead a heat loss study to identify energy inefficiencies in production or utility systems.

  • Develop recommendations for heat asset insulation improvements and assist with implementation tracking.

Document Management

  • Review existing environmental records to determine which files are legally required to maintain in physical form.

  • Create a comprehensive log of legally retained documents.

  • Collaborate with Iron Mountain or other service providers to digitally archive non-required files, supporting the site’s transition to a paper-light system.

Who are you?

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.

  • Applicants must have completed 30 semester hours before the internship starts and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate across departments.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Interest in hands-on environmental and industrial process improvement work.

For all intern and co-op positions, the hourly range is set at $16.00 - $46.00.The hourly rate for these roles is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, academic classification, and degree seeking area of study. In addition to these factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as part of any final offer.
