What you will do

 

The main purpose of the role is to lead and manage the Fitment Centre (FC) department, ensuring operational excellence across production, logistics, safety, cost, and people. The role aligns FC strategy with Group Trucks Operation (GTO) Durban’s Masterplan, GTO objectives, and Volvo Group goals. A key focus is building strong cross-functional partnerships with Volvo Trucks (Sales), GTO plant teams, and fitment service providers to ensure seamless execution, supplier compliance, and customer satisfaction.

 

Scope of the Role

 

  • Responsible for FC operations across Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and People (SQDCP).
  • Leadership of all FC personnel and oversight of facility, tools, and equipment.
  • Strategic planning and execution aligned with business objectives.
  • Management of on-site fitment service providers and supplier compliance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with Volvo Trucks (Sales) and GTO plant functions.

Job Objectives

People Leadership & Culture

  • Lead, coach, and develop a multi-disciplinary team across production, logistics, and support.
  • Foster a high-performance culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage P&C processes including timekeeping, overtime, dispute resolution, and policy compliance.
  • Drive employee engagement, wellbeing, and development.

 

Fitment Service Provider & Supplier Compliance

  • Oversee and coordinate activities of on-site fitment service providers.
  • Ensure adherence to safety, quality, delivery, and compliance standards.
  • Monitor supplier performance and enforce contractual and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement and alignment with FC schedules and customer expectations.

 

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Align FC activities with customer expectations and delivery timelines through close coordination with Volvo Trucks Sales.
  • Partner with Engineering, Production, Quality, Logistics, Business Control, and P&C to ensure smooth operations and issue resolution.

 

Communication & Reporting

  • Establish structured communication routines with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct regular alignment meetings and performance reviews.
  • Ensure timely escalation and resolution of issues.
  • Use visual management tools and dashboards to share KPIs and progress.

 

Operational Excellence

  • Oversee FC production planning, execution, and output quality.
  • Ensure parts logistics are aligned with production needs and forecasts.
  • Manage real-time issue resolution and maintain process compliance through SOPs and standard work.

 

Safety & Compliance

  • Serve as Section 8 appointee for the FC.
  • Lead safety audits, inspections, and drills (align with GTO PL).
  • Ensure compliance with Volvo Group safety standards and legal regulations.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and ergonomic workplace design.

 

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure fitment quality and process integrity.
  • Support defect containment, diagnostics, and corrective actions.
  • Drive continuous improvement and monitor quality KPIs.

 

Delivery & Planning

  • Manage chassis planning, manpower allocation, and dispatch of completed units.
  • Coordinate parts supply and address supply chain disruptions.
  • Align production output with customer and business expectations.

 

Cost Management

  • Lead cost improvement initiatives and optimize resource utilization.
  • Support lean manufacturing and cost deployment strategies.
  • Track and report cost performance metrics

Qualification & Job Job Experience

 

  • Diploma/Degree in Operations Management/ Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3+ years in manufacturing or leadership roles.
  • MS Office skills.
  • Lean/Six Sigma training in advantageous.
