3D Metal printing as a future manufacturing process 

 

Background:

Volvo Construction Equipment produces heavy machinery of premium quality, shaping the world we want to live in.

Eskilstuna is the core engineering center where we design whole machines and manufacture strategic driveline components.

In the transmission department, we would like to look deeper into future opportunities and different production methods.

 

Project Summary:

The thesis aims to investigate benefits of 3D printing as a future manufacturing process for transmission components.

 

The main activities:

 

  • Conducting a comprehensive literature review of 3D Metal printing technology, including: materials, properties, cost and trends
  • Conduct a detailed construction equipment transmission design study
  • Choose a few components for deep study
  • Design 3D printed parts
  • Run FEA or CFD analysis 
  • Compare design, cost, and benefits

 

Suitable Competences:

Ideal for master’s students in Mechanical Engineering with a 3D printing background.

Thesis Level: Master

ECTS: 30 credits per student

Starting Date: January 2026

Number of Students: 1-2
