Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Background

Are you ready to shape the future of sustainable transport and infrastructure? Join us at Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) and make a global impact with your expertise! If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match. Volvo Construction Equipment, a division of Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, haulers, excavators, and compact machines. Future Solutions is part Volvo CE and is working with topics responding to needs expected 2030 and beyond.

Project Summary

We are seeking passionate students in industrial engineering and management, engineering with entrepreneurial orientation, system engineering, or similar fields who are curious, responsible, and collaborative. This master thesis (30 ECTS) is suitable preferably for two students that are completing their Master studies. We value individuals who take initiative, work well in teams, and consistently deliver high-quality results on time.

Within Future Solutions there are several topics of interest that we would like to investigate further as thesis works.

Innovation

Volvo CE is developing into a solution provider. How will that affect how we drive innovation e.g., service innovation and packaging of the service? Should there be a unique solution for each customer or general solutions? Is there a need for a unified interface and services for all Volvo machines? What are the common services the customers are looking for e.g., charging services?

Multiple business models

Volvo CE does business in multiple ways, ranging from a one-off purchase of a machine to Volvo being a total solution provider, always with customers in the center. Several questions occur in this new business environment. How should several business models at the same time be managed, often with the same stakeholders having various roles in the different business models? How should e.g., the sales organization be set up for a solution provider? Should the current system be used (e.g., dealerships) or are there other requirements and needs that will influence? What does the roadmap look like? How will this be affected by circular business models?

Influence on organizational set-ups by technological shifts

Different technology shifts will influence sustainability, diversity and resilience but will also put new demands on the organization. As an example, moving from conventional to teleoperated to autonomous machines influences the possibility to address diversity. It can open positions currently restricted e.g., underground work today not possible for pregnant women. When the operator is not present in the machine other needs occur e.g. additional sensors to capture issues normally noticed by the driver. Hence there is a need to understand how technological shifts will influence the organizational set-up.

Additional Topics

Other potential areas of exploration may also be available based on evolving company needs and student interests. Feel free to suggest if you have a specific topic of interest.
