Background

Material Control involves managing large amounts of information, monitoring material availability, identifying risks and taking actions to secure production.

As digitalization evolves, new opportunities arise to make Material Control more efficient, visual and proactive. Digital tools, automation, data visualization and AI can potentially reduce manual and repetitive work, improve decision support and help Material Controllers focus on the activities that create the most value.

Volvo CE wants to explore how these opportunities can shape the future way of working within Material Control, enabling earlier actions and more time for proactive supplier collaboration and continuous improvement.

Thesis Scope & Deliverables

The thesis will explore how digital solutions can support the next generation of Material Control. Key activities include:

  • Mapping the current way of working and identifying time-consuming, manual and repetitive activities.
  • Identifying opportunities for digitalization, automation, visualization and AI.
  • Exploring how information can be visualized to provide better overview, prioritization and decision support.
  • Investigating how digital solutions can help identify material and delivery risks earlier.
  • Exploring how increased efficiency can enable a more proactive way of working and closer supplier collaboration.
  • Identifying and prioritizing potential digital use cases based on expected value and feasibility.
  • Developing a future-state concept and recommendations for how Material Control can continue its digital transformation.
