Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE), a division of Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, haulers, excavators, road machinery, and compact machines. Our factory in Eskilstuna manufactures gearboxes and axles. To be able to offer products better fit for circular economy considerations need to be made when designing the parts and products. Today Volvo Group and Volvo CE have a remanufacturing business of engines and transmissions as one step towards circularity. To be able to design for circularity some criteria need to be set to understand, in earlier design phases, what parts or products can be suitable for what level of circularity.

Thesis work objective

  • How can the perspective, designing the part for circularity, be included in early design phases?
  • Can we find criteria to measure the suitability of the new parts to be designed for circularity?
  • Can these criteria be translated into a useful tool?

It involves:

  • Literature review to identify what criteria or tools exist that can support decision to remanufacture parts.
  • Literature review to understand the sustainability consequences of remanufacturing.
  • Compare from a sustainability perspective, producing new parts or products with remanufactured parts or products.
  • Literature review to comparing us with piers.
  • Conducting workshops and interviews with stakeholders to identify what can be needed to consider in the criteria to decide design for circularity.
  • Translate criteria into a tool and test the tool.
  • Analyze and suggest how to implement the tool.

Some knowledge of product development, circular design and circular economy are preferred. This master thesis (30 ECTS) is suitable for one or two students that are completing their Master studies with sustainability as focus. You have, for instance, studied environmental science and/or engineering, industrial engineering, system engineering or similar.

You are curious and have an interest for environmental questions. You know how to take responsibility to move forward, cooperate with colleagues and to deliver on time.
