If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.
Introduction to thesis
Volvo Buses is adopting a strategic "shift-left" approach to testing, where simulations and virtual validation are introduced earlier in the vehicle development process. This approach reduces reliance on physical vehicles, lowers costs, and increases overall productivity. By minimizing the need for extensive test drives and manual input on test rigs, vehicle development can become more agile and efficient.
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to design and evaluate a simulation tool capable of replicating real driving conditions on Volvo Buses test rigs. This tool will integrate microcontrollers, such as Raspberry Pi, with the rigs via CAN interfaces, allowing key vehicle parameters to be digitally controlled and adjusted. Incorporating GPS data will enable realistic scenarios, such as simulating a bus driving at X km/h on a straight, flat road, with output values for vehicle speed, engine speed, accelerator pedal, and brake pedal behavior.
The project will adopt a phased MVP (Minimum viable product) approach to ensure tangible results at each stage while providing room for further development.
Main target
- Simulate a vehicle driving at X km/h on a straight, flat road
- Generate and control key outputs such as vehicle speed, engine speed, accelerator pedal, and brake pedal signals via CAN interface
Potential extensions
- Curved road scenarios (turning dynamics)
- Road inclinations and slopes
- Map-based driving paths with varying speeds and conditions
- GPS-based outputs for enhanced realism and path replication
Possible research questions
- How can a simple vehicle model (e.g., linear bicycle model) be implemented to represent bus dynamics?
- How can the simulation application be integrated with Volvo Buses existing test environment (e.g., CANoe)?
- Can this approach simplify and optimize test rig setup and utilization?
- To what extent does this method enable “shift-left” testing and streamline the validation process?
- In what other applications could such a simulation tool be used to further optimize processes?
