You lead human‑centered design in environments with many stakeholders, systems and constraints. You connect user needs with business goals and delivery realities, helping teams make better decisions using insight and data. You are comfortable working in engineering-heavy environments, with complex toolchains, technical constraints and multiple interdependent workflows. 

 

In Digital Engineering we run and optimize the digital product development lifecycle – enabling Volvo to design, build, validate, and sustain engineering solutions and vehicle software at scale. As Head of Digital Experience Design, Engineering you are accountable for the experience direction and the coherence of the experience system within the Engineering domain—ensuring that journey logic, insight, and design practices are consistently embedded in both strategy and product delivery. 

Your responsibilities include:

  • Set and communicate experience direction for the Engineering domain (principles, target journey outcomes and priorities). 
  • Partner with domain and product leadership to shape strategies, roadmaps and prioritization using insight, performance data and usability findings. 
  • Ensure design is effectively integrated into product areas and teams, embedding user insight, interaction design and usability practices in everyday engineering delivery. 
  • Steward critical end-to-end journeys while ensuring that improvements are realized through product teams—bridging journey-level intent with product-level delivery. 
  • Drive coherence across engineering tools and touchpoints by shaping how journeys, data and design standards are applied across the toolchain. 
  • Establish a practical quality bar in delivery: accessibility, design system use, research/testing, content clarity and consistency. 
  • Facilitate alignment across stakeholders to ensure teams move forward with shared intent. 
  • Work with competence leaders to define skill needs and capacity, supporting sustainable staffing and capability growth. 
  • Support the designers working in the domain through guidance, coaching and clear expectations. 

What success looks like:

  • Improved flow efficiency and usability across key engineering journeys (e.g., reduced time to complete tasks, fewer handover gaps, improved self-service and lower error rates). 
  • Clearer, more coherent experiences across engineering flows with less duplication and fewer breaks between tools. 
  • Stronger UX maturity embedded in both ways of working and everyday decision-making across engineering teams.
