Location:

Göteborg, SE, 417 15

Position Type:  Student

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Background
As modern vehicles evolve toward greater complexity and environmental sustainability, the optimization of thermal management systems becomes essential for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and ensuring reliable performance across a wide range of operating conditions. Advanced modeling and simulation tools are essential for the design, calibration, and validation of thermal systems, ensuring compliance with the stringent performance and robust standards demanded by the commercial trucking industry.

This master thesis seeks to contribute to ongoing efforts to streamline and standardize modeling processes by leveraging automation and methodological innovations, thereby reinforcing Volvo Group Trucks Technology’s dedication to technological advancement and the development of sustainable transportation solutions.

Who are we?
Thermal Management is a department within Volvo Group Trucks Technology with the responsibility for developing optimized Vehicle Thermal Management Systems for all truck brands within the Volvo Group.  As a master thesis student within the Thermal Management department, you will be a valuable contributor to our continuous learning. You will be surrounded by a global and diverse team of highly skilled and engaged colleagues who will be interested in the progress of your work and eager to help and support you along the way.

What will you do?
The thesis will focus on automating the processes of model creation and validation, with the objective of establishing a standardized methodology for both. The work will be conducted through the following tasks:
•    Develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary modeling methodologies.
•    Conduct complete thermal system modeling and calibration through the application of one-dimensional (1D) simulation models.
•    Ensure the adoption of a standardized methodological framework across multiple vehicle projects to achieve consistent and comparable results.
•    Implement automation using Python to develop a more efficient and robust process.
•    Engage with multiple thermal simulation platforms, including Simulink, GT-Suite, and related tools.

Expected outcomes
As outputs from the thesis work, we would like to have:
•    A standardized Simulink modeling methodology applicable across multiple vehicle projects.
•    A robust, automated framework for model development and validation.
•    Documentation and presentation of the approach, methodology and key findings

Suitable qualifications:
•    Final year student in Master program for Automotive, Physics, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or similar
•    Knowledge in Thermodynamics and programming.
•    Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and GT-Suite.
