Long Description

Brake emission experiments: Assessment of different friction pairs

Future heavy-duty transportation needs to be energy efficient and minimize the use of fossil fuels. Electrified powertrains have high propulsion efficiency but can also recuperate some of the energy during braking (regenerative braking). However, traditional brakes are also needed, and the optimal use of regenerative and traditional braking is a non-trivial task. The traditional braking system also emits wear particles which can cause severe effects on human health. In fact, the wear emissions (from both brakes, tyres and road) are the dominant source from transportation since 2013 (considering PM2.5) due to efficient tail-pipe regulations using particulate filters. Some legislation for wear particles will come in place from Euro 7. The particle emissions from transportation are still causing thousands of premature deaths in Europe and there is a big need for better understanding to minimize the particle emissions. The long-term objective from this project is to contribute to reduced health impact from particle emissions.

Project description

In collaboration with Volvo trucks at their testing facility, you will perform transient PM/PN measurement to get the size-distribution during different brake events. Experiments will be performed both at the Chalmers brake test rig and at the HD rig at Volvo Technology in Lundby. The objectives include the characterization of the brake wear emissions as a function brake system conditions and operations. You will enable the development of a prediction model equipment to be used in the assessment of future brake systems that will comply with Euro 7.

About you

We seek 1-2 students looking for a Master’s thesis work with interest physical experiments and reduced impact from emissions. You should be skilled in Experimental physics, Matlab/Python and statistical tools for evaluation of test results. You should also have skills and interest in mechanical systems.
