Master Thesis - CFD study of different ignition systems for future fuel engines

Location:

Göteborg, SE, 417 15

Position Type:  Student

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Background

With global warming’s impact, diesel and gasoline are being replaced by alternative fuels with lower or zero carbon emissions. These fuels are gaining popularity due to their similar combustion properties.
Volvo Penta, a leader in marine and industrial engines, is committed to sustainable solutions. At the Lundby campus in Gothenburg, a diverse team of experts is innovating to reduce the environmental impact.
We seek motivated master students interested in simulation modeling to help explore these sustainable solutions.

Thesis work Objective

Define the requirements from a combustion perspective to achieve good combustion performance for alternative fuels.

  • Build a  single cylinder engine model in Converge  using existing models within Volvo Penta or Volvo Group.
  • Use 1-D boundary conditions to try different operating points and conditions for the 3-D simulation
  • Simulate different ignition systems and report the influence on combustion performance
  • Simulate different combustion chamber designs and report the influence the designs have on the combustion performance
  • Perform a sensitivity study of different engine strategies  and the influence on the combustion performance.
  • Recommend the benefits of the concept designs and strategies for a marine application
