Master Thesis - FEA/NVH Dynamic Model Measurement, Modelling, & Calibration
Göteborg, SE, 417 15
Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.
Background
Development of marine and industrial drivelines involves noise and vibration.
For high fidelity simulation results it is essential to calibrate dynamic models to measurement data.
In the structural dynamic area this is done as a combination of computational- and experimental modal analysis.
The calibrated finite element models can then be used in different areas of FEA such as
noise and vibration analyses, vibration fatigue analyses and design, root-cause analyses,
virtual development of products, and to improve noise and vibration performance of our products.
Thesis work Objective
How to update models and calibrate these for high fidelity simulation?
Activities:
- On a simpler single part
Perform experimental modal analysis
Model and make computational modal analysis
Discuss pros and cons of methods and select a suitable method
Use software or program code to update and calibrate the model
Updates can include dimensions, boundary conditions, material properties, damping, mesh density, using optimization methods
Present measures of accuracy and validity of the calibrated model
- Use the selected method on a larger structure where experimental modal data
and finite element model can already be available, to show applicability to real world problems.

CAE Simulation
At Volvo Penta the CAE department work with simulation models (FEA, MBD, CFD, 1D, etc.) in close cooperation with the
NVH department which work with measurements (vibration, strain, sound, etc.) in test environment (especially at the Volvo Penta Marine Test Center) and in the field.
We use modern commercial CAE software’s and powerful hardware to meet the high set demands
