Background

Investigate and Simulate Argon Power Cycle as a design concept for Volvo Penta ICE (Internal Combustion Engines)

 

With global warming’s impact, diesel and gasoline are being replaced by alternative fuels with lower or zero carbon emissions. Volvo Penta’s focus on sustainability leads to new challenges such as reduction of emissions and development of more efficient power generating solutions.

 

The hydrogen-argon power cycle could have a significant impact for the energy sector, could it also be the solution for Volvo Pentas sustainability?

 

To understand the potential as well as disadvantage and gain more knowledge of the Argon Power Cycle a first step is introduced with this master thesis during spring 2026.

Thesis work objective

Investigate possibilities to use Argon Power Cycle in Volvo Penta Engines.

 

Activities:

  • Literature study of the Agon Power Cycle
  • Design study of a Volvo Penta specific engine running on Argon Power Cycle
  • Business case and product cost investigation
  • 1D Simulation study of the Argon power cycle for the specific engine
  • (3D simulation of combustion chamber)

Who are you?

  • MSc student in any of the following fields​
    • Design and Product development​
    • Mechanical Engineering​
    • Or equivalent education​
  • Beneficial to have knowledge in 1D simulation software (GT) or 3D CAE software (Converge) 
  • Beneficial to be interested in Flow simulation and Advanced Combustion Engine Concepts

 

Thesis Level: Master (30 ECTS points)​

Language: English​

Starting date: January 2026​

Number of students: 1-2 students​
