Master Thesis: Optimizing Battery Lifetime for Boat to Grid (B2G)

Location:

Göteborg, SE, 417 15

Position Type:  Student

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

What you will do

At Volvo Penta you will contribute to the transformation of our company, the transport industry and society at large. Volvo Penta is a world-leading supplier of engines and complete power systems for marine and industrial applications. Volvo Penta has developed a global leadership and one of the industry´s strongest brands.

Background:

The first designs of electric drivelines for marine have mainly taken boat usage as input. Boat usage is 40-90 hours per year for leisure applications, but could vary based on different regions and patterns. Introduction of B2g (Boat to Grid) with a possible usage  of +5000 hours add new requirements and considerations.

For B2G, control of charging and discharging will be managed externally (by aggregator or virtual power plant). In this scenario it's necessary to secure good battery lifetime using B2G.

Thesis work objective:

  • Research the optimal balance for best revenue from ancillary/grid services vs. battery lifetime for primary application
    • Optimize grid usage profile together with primary usage profile to maximize battery utilization within expected lifetime/warranty period for maximum profitability while not compromising primary usage (reduce calendar ageing waste)
    • Find and define constraints on grid usage profiles (power, energy, DoD) to maintain optimal battery life for the primary usage within expected lifetime/warranty period.
  • Thesis should take into consideration various li-ion chemistries. At least LFP and NCA shall be considered.
