Background

Volvo Penta's accelerated focus on sustainability with new fuels leads to new demands of intake charge mixing, flow distribution and overall engine breathing. To support our journey towards more sustainable fuels, such as bio-methane and hydrogen, we are now seeking a knowledge leap in the form of a master thesis to map the potential of an optimized intake manifold, improved port geometries and potentially also an improved exhaust manifold.

 

Thesis work objective

Design new ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) inlet ports and intake manifold for optimized flow distribution and improved fuel consumption (renewable fuels).

 

Activities

  • Benchmarking analysis from market
  • Literature study of different design principles and important parameters
  • Create CAD model that we can 3D print and test on real engine and/or flow test bench
  • CAE flow analyzes in collaborations with CAE department and lab

Who are you?

You should possess these qualifications:

 

  • BSc/MSc student in any of the following fields
    • Design and Product development
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Or equivalent education
  • Knowledge in 3D CAD software
    • Preferably Creo Parametric
  • Beneficial (but not mandatory) - knowledge in fluid dynamics and CFD
