Master thesis: Use-Case and Application-Optimized Range Estimation for Volvo Penta EMOB

Location:

Göteborg, SE, 417 15

Position Type:  Student

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

What you will do

At Volvo Penta, you will contribute to the transformation of our company, the transport industry, and society at large. As electrification expands across a diverse range of applications, accurate and reliable range prediction becomes a key enabler for customer productivity, operational confidence, and energy efficiency.

In this thesis, you will investigate how application-specific operating patterns can be used to improve range estimation for battery electric drivelines and lay the foundation for future digital twin capabilities. You will:

  • Define representative use cases and duty cycles for different electric applications.
  • Review and benchmark state-of-the-art methods for range and remaining-time estimation.
  • Analyze operational and vehicle data to evaluate prediction accuracy.
  • Investigate how factors such as load profile, mission type, operating environment, and internal driveline systems, such as the thermal management system, impact range estimation.
  • Develop and assess concepts for application-aware range prediction.
  • Explore how improved estimation methods can support the first steps toward a digital twin framework for electric powertrains.
  • Present recommendations for future implementation and development.

This thesis offers a unique opportunity to combine data analytics, electrification, and system modeling to solve real-world challenges in sustainable transport solutions.

Your future team

You will join Volvo Penta's Industrial EMOB Controls team, working closely with engineers and specialists. Our team combines deep technical expertise with a collaborative and supportive culture where innovation, learning, and knowledge sharing are encouraged.
