Specialist System Engineer at Volvo Autonomous Solutions

Location:

Göteborg, SE, 417 15

Position Type:  Graduate

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Who are we?

Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S) is the business area within Volvo Group that accelerates the development, commercialization, and sales of autonomous solutions. The vision for Volvo Group is to be the most desired and successful transport and infrastructure solution provider in the world. We don’t sell trucks and machines: we operate the solutions through the full life cycle to maximize the improvements achievable through autonomy.

That goes hand in hand with our long-term ambitions: 100% Safe, 100% Fossil free and 100% more productive. The automation of our vehicles is seen as a natural step towards reaching that goal. Joining the Volvo Group means contributing to a large global company that is transforming itself towards these ambitions. We are committed to diversity and inclusion, fostering a team culture where differences are seen as a stepping-stone to better results.

The Role

In this role, you’ll join a highly skilled cross‑functional team where expertise in wiring harness development, hardware engineering, and system engineering comes together to create end‑to‑end autonomous functionality. This team is at the heart of enabling autonomous driving capabilities across the entire Volvo Group, and you will be a key contributor to that mission.

As an Experienced System Design Engineer, you will take the lead in developing and maintaining the autonomous vehicle interface—ensuring that software, hardware, and vehicle architecture come together in a seamless, robust system. You’ll help define how autonomous‑ready vehicles behave and interact in real‑world environments, translating that into clear system functionalities and documentation that guide development from concept to production.

Your work will span the full development chain: aligning requirements with internal and external partners, breaking down complex functional and non‑functional needs into actionable specifications, and contributing to the evolution from L2 to L3 autonomous capabilities. Drawing on your technical judgment, you’ll craft solutions that are efficient, scalable, and compliant with global regulatory standards.

A key part of the role involves reviewing system designs and ensuring that verification and validation plans meet the highest expectations. Staying connected to vehicle architecture, upcoming product roadmaps, and real customer use cases will help you maintain a holistic, forward‑looking perspective in everything you do.

Collaboration is central to your success here. You’ll work closely with software and hardware teams across the Volvo Group to deliver integrated autonomous features that are not only technically solid but also move the entire industry forward.

Your Expertise

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in Electrical & Electronic (E/E) systems engineering.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and development processes.
  • Solid knowledge of electrical architecture within Volvo base platforms (or similar heavy vehicle platforms).
  • Proven experience in cross-functional technical leadership.
  • Theoretical understanding of Embedded C/C++; working knowledge of Python or scripting languages is an advantage.
  • Experience with functional safety processes (e.g., safety analysis, concept design, requirement definition, and validation) is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Agile/SAFe methodologies and tools such as JIRA and Confluence.
  • Experience in ISO 26262 functional safety
  • Experience in autonomous systems or ADAS
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity (ISO 21434)
  • Experience with requirement tools (e.g., DOORS, SystemWeaver)
  • Experience in model-based systems engineering (MBSE)
