What you will do
At Volvo Penta you will contribute to the development of electrified powertrain and energy distribution solutions for marine applications. You will:
Evaluate the results from the previous thesis and decide which Bus-Tie solution(s) should be pursued. Develop and compare selected concepts considering losses, cooling, cost, size and packaging, and develop the electrical and mechanical design with related documentation. Build a prototype, define and perform testing, and evaluate the results with consideration of applicable DNV requirements and the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD).
Your future team
You will primarily work with the Mechanical Design and Energy Distribution team at Volvo Penta. The team develops electrified powertrain and energy distribution solutions for a broad range of marine and industrial applications, with cross-functional interaction throughout the thesis.
Who are you?

- Master’s student in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Product Engineering or a closely related field.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, electrical distribution and protection devices, with experience in electrical design, simulation or engineering documentation.
- Interest in prototype development, measurements and laboratory testing.
- Knowledge of HV systems, marine applications, EMC or relevant standards is advantageous.
- Mechanical design/CAD, MATLAB/Simulink or PSCAD experience is a plus.
- Ability to work at Volvo Penta office in Gothenburg 2-3 days per week.
- High level of personal drive and enthusiasm to problem solve.
- Analytical and curious problem-solver, able to work independently and collaborate with cross-functional teams. Strong English communication skills. Master thesis: 30 ECTS | Start: January 2027 | 1–2 students.
