Thesis work: Design and Control of Grid-Tied PE Converter for Battery Energy Storage System

Location:

Göteborg, SE, 417 15

Position Type:  Student

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

What you will do

At Volvo Penta you will contribute to the transformation of our company, the transport industry and society at large. Volvo Penta is a world-leading supplier of engines and complete power systems for marine and industrial applications. Volvo Penta has developed a global leadership and one of the worlds strongest brands.

Background:

The market for battery energy storage systems is rapidly expanding due to the need for better integration of renewable energy sources and the increasing demand for fast charging stations for electric vehicles. Power electronics are essential in these systems, performing critical functions such as recertification (converting AC to DC), providing galvanic isolation via high-frequency transformers to enhance safety, and adjusting DC voltage to match battery and load requirements. These technologies ensure efficient energy storage and retrieval, supporting the stable supply of renewable energy and the quick, efficient charging of electric vehicles.

Thesis work objective:

  • Build a simulation model of grid connected inverter for a battery energy storage system
  • The inverter should include a HF transformer converter stage to achieve galvanic isolation
  • The simulation model should include the losses of the transformer and the grid filter as well as the semiconductor switching and conduction losses
  • Different load cycle scenarios should be considered
  • Main objective: The energy efficiency and power density of the system should be evaluated in comparison to the traditional 50Hz transformer solution

Who are you?

Do you dream big? We do too, and we are excited to grow together. In this role, you will bring:

  • Good understanding of power electronics and modeling of magnetic components (inductors and transformers)
  • Basic understanding of inverter control techniques including pulse width modulation and PI control schemes
  • Basic understanding of dynamic battery models
  • Good knowledge of Matlab and Simulink

What’s in it for you?

We offer a solid package of compensation and benefits, plus you will enjoy:

  • Working with some of the best electromobility experts
  • Engage with a x-functional team and learn a great deal of Volvo Penta's existing and future products
  • A modern and flexible work place that potentially could become your future workplace
