What you will do
At Volvo Group you will contribute to the transformation of our company, the transport industry and society at large. You will:
- Support quality validation and metallurgical investigations for heavy‑duty powertrain components in a high‑volume manufacturing environment.
- Perform metallographic preparation, grain size evaluation, microstructural analysis (SEM/optical), and hardness testing to link microstructure, hardness, and performance.
- Contribute to digital lab development by improving LIMS, and integrating Power BI, Excel, and SharePoint for better reporting, traceability, and data standardization.
- Participate in continuous improvement and failure analysis activities, collaborating closely with laboratory engineers and production teams.
In one sentence: you will apply materials science in a real production setting to strengthen product quality and digitalize our metallurgy lab, working hand‑in‑hand with engineers and production stakeholders.
Your future team
You will join a small, specialized Metallurgy Laboratory team within Volvo Group Trucks Operations in Hagerstown, working with experienced engineers from materials science, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing backgrounds. The team culture is collaborative, hands‑on, and improvement‑driven: you will be encouraged to take ownership, share ideas, and work cross‑functionally with production and engineering to ensure robust, safe, and reliable powertrain components.
Who are you?
Essential requirements (must‑haves)
- Currently enrolled in an Engineering degree with at least 30 semester hours completed, preferably in Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
- Summer interns may work up to 40 hours per week.
- Valid U.S. work authorization.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in cross‑functional teams.
- High attention to detail, with a clear focus on safety, data accuracy, and organization in a dynamic production environment.
- A continuous improvement mindset and proactive problem‑solving approach.
Nice to have
- Prior experience or coursework in metallurgy, materials characterization, or mechanical testing.
- Familiarity with metallographic preparation, hardness testing, or microstructural analysis (e.g. SEM, optical microscopy).
- Experience with data tools such as Excel, Power BI, or lab information systems.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and follow through on technical projects.
- Interest in manufacturing, heavy‑duty powertrains, and quality engineering in an industrial setting.
