Purpose of the role
The purpose of the Legal Counsel is to provide business-oriented legal advice and support to VGSA on a broad range of legal, regulatory, contractual and compliance matters. You will translate business needs into practical legal solutions, support risk management and help embed a strong compliance culture in day-to-day operations.
The role covers legal support across relevant business areas, including commercial contracts, corporate and governance matters, regulatory compliance, employment and industrial relations, aftermarket and distribution matters, litigation and dispute management, competition and anti-trust matters, data protection, ethics and other operational legal topics as required.
Reporting: This position is based at Volvo Group Southern Africa (VGSA) Pty headquarters. You will report to VGSA’s Managing Director, with a dotted line into Volvo Trucks International, where you will be supported by an experienced lawyer and the central Volvo Trucks Legal team.
Job Objectives
- Provide legal counsel and guidance to VGSA business stakeholders on applicable laws, regulations and legal risks connected to business strategies and operations.
- Draft, review, negotiate and advise on commercial contracts, letters of agreement, policies, templates and other legal documents relating to trade, commercial, financial and operational matters.
- Identify, assess and help mitigate legal and compliance risks, balancing sound legal judgment with practical business objectives.
- Research, analyse and interpret proposed and existing laws, regulations and legal developments relevant to VGSA and the Volvo Group business in Southern Africa.
- Support the business on compliance matters, including the Code of Conduct, whistleblowing principles, compliance policies, data protection requirements and other Volvo Group policies and guidelines.
- Assist with dispute resolution, litigation, arbitration, mediation and interactions with courts, authorities or regulators, as appropriate.
- Manage and coordinate external legal counsel on complex or specialist matters, ensuring high-quality, efficient and commercially relevant support.
- Develop and update legal and compliance policies, procedures, guidelines and contract templates where needed.
- Deliver legal and compliance training and communications that help build awareness, accountability and a culture of doing business the right way.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with colleagues in the business and within the Volvo Group to support common decisions, best practices and continuous improvement.

Qualification & Job Experience
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent legal qualification.
- Valid admission or licence to practise law in the relevant jurisdiction, where required.
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ relevant experience in a corporate legal department or reputable law firm.
- Experience with employment and industrial relations matters, including applicable South African labour and occupational health and safety legislation, is an advantage.
Key Competencies
- Strong knowledge of commercial and contract law, corporate law, competition law, data privacy law, compliance, risk management and regulatory matters.
- Ability to draft, review and negotiate contracts and provide concise written legal opinions.
- Commercial acumen, analytical thinking, planning and organising skills, with the ability to deliver results and meet business expectations.
- Excellent communication, influencing, networking and negotiation skills, with the ability to work with stakeholders at different levels of the organization and explain legal concepts to non-legal business partners
- Capable of working independently, showing initiative and problem-solving skills, while also thriving in a team environment.
