Thesis: Prediction of Atmosphere Flow in Case Hardening Furnace by CFD Calculations

Location:

Köping, SE, 731 80

Position Type:  Student

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

We Are Looking for a Thesis Student!

Background of Thesis / Project Summary:

Uniformity of the atmosphere is one of the most crucial factors in the carburising process. By utilizing CFD calculations, improvements in the furnace—such as optimizing gas inlet configurations and fan speeds—can be achieved more accurately, reducing the number of trial-and-error adjustments. This approach aims to enhance process control, increase efficiency, and ensure consistent quality in heat treatment.

Student Profile:

We are looking for a student in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) with a strong interest in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
The ideal candidate is analytical, curious, and enjoys working with flow analysis to solve real engineering challenges.

Thesis Subject:

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a model of a furnace that allows for variation of multiple influencing factors (X number of parameters) to predict the uniformity of the atmosphere inside the furnace.

The assignment includes:

  • Conducting a literature study
  • Collecting detailed information about the specific furnace
  • Creating a model and calculating the atmosphere flow using current furnace settings plus at least two additional settings
  • Investigating whether the model can be applied to other furnaces within the company
  • Documenting your findings and recommendations

We Offer:

•    An engaging research environment with experienced supervisors
•    Opportunities to develop your technical and analytical skills
•    A platform to contribute to industry-relevant research

Application:

Join us in advancing the understanding of grain growth in steels and take a significant step in your engineering career!
Apply not later than november 30th, 2025.
