Production Engineer

Location:

Middletown, PA, US, 17057

Position Type:  Professional

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

What you will do

At Volvo, as a Production Engineer, you will contribute to the transformation of our factory, the transport industry, and society at large. This role is a mix of Manufacturing and Logistics Engineering, with a strong emphasis on being present on the factory floor to understand our processes and actively support improvements.

You will lead the industrialization of new remanufacturing products into our factory and continuously improve production and logistics flows, based on your expertise and interests. A key focus of the role is supporting production with line balancing and ensuring we optimize production while clearly separating production and logistics work within the factory.

As a Production Engineer, you will focus on supporting the factory with:

Process Design and Optimization

  • Designing Workflows: Create and refine manufacturing processes, factory layouts, and operation sequences to maximize output, flow, and efficiency.
  • Line Balancing: Support production teams with line balancing and workload optimization to ensure stable, efficient, and safe operations.
  • Improving Efficiency: Apply Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to eliminate bottlenecks and non-value-added activities in both production and logistics flows.
  • Tooling and Automation: Design or source specialized tools and fixtures; support the integration of automation into production and material-handling processes.

Operations and Troubleshooting

  • Floor Support: Spend significant time on the shop floor providing hands-on support, understanding current processes, and helping implement changes to production and logistics flows.
  • Technical Support: Troubleshoot machine, process, or flow-related issues and drive sustainable improvements.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Develop preventative programs to minimize downtime and ensure machinery remains operational.
  • Data Analysis: Monitor production and logistics KPIs and analyze data to identify trends, imbalances, and recurring issues.

Compliance

  • Safety Protocols: Draft and implement procedures to ensure facility compliance and worker safety.
  • Ensure all developed solutions comply with applicable safety, quality, and environmental requirements.

Management and Collaboration

  • Staff Training: Train shop-floor workers on new equipment, updated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and improved production/logistics flows.
  • Budgeting and Planning: Estimate production costs and support planning activities.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Production, Logistics, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to ensure producibility, efficient flow, and profitability.

Logistics

  • Facility Layout & Flow: Optimize factory, warehouse, and storage layouts to support efficient material flow and minimize transportation waste.
  • Production vs. Logistics Separation: Help define and separate production work from logistics activities to improve efficiency and role clarity on the shop floor.
  • Inventory Management: Balance stock levels to prevent shortages while reducing carrying costs.
  • Material Handling: Support and integrate material-handling solutions such as AGVs, conveyors, and kitting systems to streamline internal logistics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical, Logistics, or related field).
  • 5–10 years of experience in a manufacturing environment as a Production Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or Industrial/Logistics Engineer.
  • Strong hands-on experience working directly on the factory floor.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, and production flow optimization.
  • Experience in automotive, remanufacturing, or industrial operations is preferred.
