Overall Purpose

  • To carry out plating and fabrication tasks to produce high-quality steel components and structures in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and company standards. The role involves marking out, cutting, shaping, and assembling metal plates, ensuring precision and safety throughout the process.

Main Responsibilities (key tasks)

The key responsibilities of the job

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Mark out, cut, and shape steel plates using appropriate tools and machinery.
  • Assemble components using tack welding, bolting, or other methods

  • Completes the specific task within the given time period
  • Ensure all work meets quality standards and tolerances.
  • Conduct visual inspections and measurements to verify accuracy.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations and company procedures.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Awareness of Health & Safety procedures
  • Ability to work at heights
  • Good physical stamina and manual dexterity
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings.
  • Skilled in using hand and power tools, including flame cutting and grinding.
  • Basic welding skills (MMA & MIG)
  • Problem-solving skills – to handle unexpected issues during fabrication.

Experience

What type and level of experience is required – be specific

  • Proven experience in heavy fabrication or structural steelwork ie; Shipbuilding yards, Construction sites, Railway workshops or Aerospace or automotive manufacturing

General Requirements – Additional Information

  • Work closely with welders, fitters, and engineers to complete projects.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
  • Support apprentices and junior staff when required.
  • Identify and report defects or deviations from specifications.
  • Liaise with engineers, welders, and supervisors to resolve fabrication challenges.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and lean manufacturing practices.

 

This is a 12 month fixed term contract.
