People and Safety Advisor

What you will do

This role is responsible for supporting, influencing, and guiding (TTI) Trucks Technology & Industrial  (IM) International Manufacturing Durban operations on Safety, Health, Wellbeing, Risk Management, and People Experience matters. The role is responsible for driving legal compliance and to support operational excellence by embedding proactive risk management practices and contributing to an engaging workplace where people can perform at their best.  The position provides leadership and practical guidance to strengthen the Durban Plant’s safety journey, embed an active care mindset, support employee wellbeing, and contribute to a positive employee experience.

 

Job Objectives:

 

Safety Management and Compliance

 

  • Develop, maintain, and monitor safety policies and procedures in line with Volvo Group standards and local legislative requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments, accident investigations, incident reporting, and containment planning.
  • Support health investigations, PPE management, and emergency preparedness processes.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant occupational health and safety requirements and internal standards.

 

Wellbeing and Health Promotion

 

  • Lead workplace wellbeing initiatives, including mental health, ergonomics, lifestyle, and wellness programmes.
  • Coordinate incapacity management processes related to ill health in collaboration with relevant service providers.
  • Arrange wellness days and support initiatives aimed at improving employee wellbeing, reducing absenteeism, and enhancing workplace morale.
  • Maintain accurate records related to incidents, occupational health matters, and compensation claims under COIDA.
  • Provide wellness statistics and insights to support reporting, decision-making, and continuous improvement.

 

People Experience

 

  • Align Durban Plant initiatives with global employee experience priorities and ensure effective local implementation.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, termination, and related employee lifecycle processes.
  • Promote a positive employee experience through effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and support to employees and leaders.
  • Contribute to initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, inclusion, and workplace culture.

Risk Management

  • Liaise with relevant service providers to support effective plant risk management processes.
  • Develop and maintain the plant risk management plan, ensuring key risks are identified, monitored, and mitigated.
  • Track action logs for identified risks and play a key role in closing audit findings and corrective actions.
  • Escalate high-risk areas and potential risk exposures to management for timely intervention and decision-making.
  • Support proactive risk reviews and continuous improvement activities across the plant.

 

Volvo Performance System and Continuous Improvement

 

  • Embed Volvo Performance System principles, including built-in quality, just-in-time processes, waste elimination, and transparent performance monitoring.
  • Champion the integration of safety and wellbeing principles within the Volvo Performance System (VPS).
  • Assess Bradley Curve maturity and support the implementation of improvement actions.
  • Drive continuous improvement activities related to safety culture, risk reduction, and employee wellbeing.

 

Training and People Engagement

 

  • Design and deliver safety training, awareness sessions, and wellbeing workshops.
  • Ensure training comprehension, participation, and certification where applicable.
  • Foster a strong safety culture through ongoing education, awareness campaigns, and participative safety committees.
  • Support management and employee representatives during inspections, audits, investigations, and improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and professionalism.

Reporting and Audits

 

  • Monitor performance using leading and lagging indicators, safety dashboards, and key performance metrics.
  • Manage internal and external audits, Health and Safety committee activities, and proactive improvement action plans.
  • Prepare reports, statistics, and insights to support management decision-making.
  • Ensure audit findings, risks, and corrective actions are tracked and closed within agreed timelines.

Qualification & Job Experience:

 

  • Matric / Grade 12.
  • Honours Degree or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Human Resources, or a related field.
  • SAMTRAC or NEBOSH Certificate, preferably IGC or Diploma.
  • First Aid, HIRA, and Fire Safety certificates.
  • Registration with a recognised professional body such as SAFAS, NOSA, or SHEilds would be advantageous.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably within the automotive or logistics sector.

Key Competencies

  • Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, COIDA, BCEA, Labour Relations Act, and related regulations.
  • Strong risk assessment, incident investigation, root cause analysis, audit, and documentation skills.
  • Good understanding of employee wellbeing, incapacity management, and employee lifecycle processes.
  • Advanced MS Office capability.
  • Familiarity with lean production systems and continuous improvement principles.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, influencing, and problem-solving skills.
